hard to start sometimes
Hi,
I have a '99 ranger 2.5 I4, auto. w overdrive, approx 50K miles total with 10K in last 5 years that I have owned it.
My typical trip is about 10 miles one way. I live in Arizona.
The Problem:
Sometimes, when the truck has sat for several days, or more, it takes several 30 sec cranking sessions for it to start. It then runs fine and restarts readily. This might be getting more frequent.
I have checked battery voltage ( Fluke 27 ) 12.49 prior to cranking, everything off.
10.32 while cranking. ( nearly the same on the battery posts or on the battery cables. )
14.32 with engine started and idling. Battery is just over 1 year old.
The truck has a "Clifford" theft system but that 'seems' to be working OK.
Hints ?? Suggestions ??
TIA BillB

After it has sat for a few days,, cycle the key to the 'ON' position5 seconds or so, a few times or more'without cranking' the engne.. Then give'r a go.. Still take multiple times to start or does it fire on the the first crank?start any easier?
Hi,
I checked for pressure at the pressure relief ( schrader ) valve and had none until I ran the pump several times.
Looks like it is most likely EITHER a pressure regulator or the fuel pump.
Is there any good way to diagnostically determine which is leaking back without taking things apart ??
I have discounted the possibility of an injector leaking as that would seem to cause the engine to try to fire and then to puff smoke after it starts. Is this a good assumption ??

Yep, when it sets over night I have no pressure at the test valve. 3 cycles of key on and off ( running the pump ) then on the 4th crank and it fires with the first crank. Now to sort where the leak back is occurring.
Thanks
