Is there any way to change the oil pump on a 91 ranger 2wd with a 2.3 liter without pulling the motor?

 

I had to remove the pump on my 89 2wd and all the books and everything said you should be able to take the oil pan off without removing anything else but after trying all there was to try I gave up and took the whole engine out. I came to the conclusion that you have to take the transmission off or take the engine out,one or the other.
