Default over heating

2000 ranger 3.0 over heating problem. What is the purpose of the smaller hose that tees off the bottom radiator hose . Any way my truck keeps blowing the cooling resevoir lid open ,and it seems like I can smell gas in the reservoir . Can any one help.thnxs

Try running a compression check on the cylinders. If you are getting that much pressure, overheating and your water pump is good, you proably have a head gasket problem.
