Shifter Link Cable Removal and Installation
I have a 1996 Ford Ranger 4.0L, AT w/ AC, 6Cyl, 4x2WD. I have to start it in Neutral since I believe
the shifter cable is either stretched or damaged. I have a new one but don't know how to replace it. Can someone reading this post, please guide me as what I have to do to replace it, please? Thank everyone who reads and post replies to this topic. David |
Couple questions..
Does the selector report the full range as correct positions? Cable issues generally tend to show ‘off over the full ranges.. Also, many times there’s a no start in P it’s the trans range sensor. |
1. Yes the selector does reort the full range, but it will not go into "P'", only "R".
2. Will check the trans range sensor and get back with ya. |
Where is this Neutral Safety Switch Located? Thanks in Advance.
|
Sensor is mounted to the trans case where the cable attaches to the lever.
Does the selector have some abnormal ‘slop to it? If so, look under the dash just above the foot well area. At the base of the column the upper shift lever has two screws that attach it to the column selector tube. If they come loose, it makes it difficult to select Park. It will also create a fair amount or shifter slop, as would the shift tube bushings and/or clamps . The torx screws quite often come loose on many models.. |
Thank you. I've got another cable, just in case. Maybe a new sensor will do the trick.
Thanks again. |
Check the screws straight off, they are a good cause for shift position hunting, and more so hard to get into P
|
It does have alot of slop in shifting.
I'll check, I may get lucky and not have to replace anything, huh? Thanks again. |

First of all check my signature below.
What kind of issue are you experiencing? Shifter cable almost never ever need to be replaced or adjusted. The only thing that doesn't last, as far as shifting is concern, is the plastic shifter bushing (normally 2 of them). And most common issue is the 2 torx screws that come loose Hayapower mentioned. So basically you'll be working under the dash, and not at the tranny. |
