Default 2000 SE overheating at idle and no heat

I have a 2000 SE with approximatley 91k on it. The vehicle has recently started overheating while sitting at an idle. The fan is working as I've heard it kick on several times. Even at an idle if I place the vehicle in park bring the engine to 2000rpm the temperature will drop. Would it be safe to say the water pump is becoming weak or something is clogged?

My second concern has to do with the heat. The vehicle when warm will produce some heat for anywhere from 10-120 seconds and then goes cold. If I turn off the heat wait a few minutes and turn it back on I can get another 10-120 seconds of warm air. These problems both presented themselves within a month or so of each other. Do you think that they're related?

Either way I'm looking for some input as to what the problem may be. Thanks for anyone's time who helps me out.

Could be your thermostat.

Does the heat return when you hold the RPM's at 2000? If it does, I would replace the water pump. If it doesn't, I would go with the thermostat also.
