Default 2002 Taurus air bag light

I have a 2002 Taurus SES. The driver's side seat belt will not attach unless I held the button down. Then the seat belt chime and light would go on.

I tried to fix the seat belt catch but I could not get it to work other than one time. I disconnected the wires from the air bag sensor, whileI was working on it, which appears part of the seat belt unit. I then cut the wire that goes from the seat belt catch to the chime and that worked. I plugged back in the wires to air bag sensor but the air bag lights blinks code 51 and thenstays on. I will eventually look for one at a junk yard.

My questions is what is code 51 and will it eventually go off. Did cutting the wire to the seat belt chime also cause the air bag light to stay on or was it just from temporarily disconnecting the sensor. Appreciate any help.

The code 51 is for the drivers side seat belt latch. Here is the exact description.

51
Driver Safety Belt Buckle Switch Circuit Short to Ground
Driver Safety Belt Buckle Switch Resistance Out of Range
