I drove the car to work with no problems. When i went to leave for lunch the transmission would not shift into any gear and now has a whining sound almost like a pump. I have changed fluid and filters with no success. Any ideas what the problem maybe without pulling the transmission.

I drove my 1997 Ford Taurus off the used car dealer lot and it would changed gear. Stucked in gear one. I took it back. Repair cost $700 since 3 gears weren't shifting. Some electrical circuit malmunction. Try hooking up an OBD-II reader (http://www.warehouseautoparts.com/) to get the codes. If your check engine lights are on chances are some circuits aren't switching.
