Hi I am looking for some direction for a heater problem on going. My 02 has been since last winter sometime without warm air it started with the leak in the overflow tank, then progressed to the replacement of the metal heater tube on the fire wall now I can't get anything but cold air. Now my thoughts on the problem.
I think it may be a heater air control problem and I was wondering if there is a control modual for heat/air that could cause just cold air.

I dont know if the heater control valve is electronically controlled, or vacuumed controlled ,or what. Try locating it and see is you can open it manuelly.Cconsiderflushing/refilling thecoolant, if it had notbeen done in awhile it may be restricted or clogged. Also does you temp gauge show normal operating temps?

 

That is what is so puzzling about this the temp gauge is reading normal and the car is not over heating and the system was drained when I changed the heater tube and pulled the over flow tank and fixed that. Where do you think the control valve may be located? [:@]

You have an actuator under the dash. Look under the dash just to the right of center. You will see a small white plastic box. It is about 3 x 4 inches and about 1 inch thick. Stick head under the dash and have someone work the heat/cold ****. See if the little box makes a linkage move. If not, replace the little white box.

I checked the white box and it seems to be working. I really do apreciate the help. I have asked this question locally but I am not sure I am getting the right answer. Could there be air in the system somrwhere?

Air in the system is a good possibility. One way to try to purge it is to raise the front of the vehicle(support it on jack stands if using jack to raise) and remove cap. Start car and let run until the engine gewts to normal operating temperature. Then watch to see if the coolant is low. If it is, top it off and see if heat returns. Just remember, the radiator and coolant tank needs to be the highest point in the cooling system. Cheap and crude but effective.

 

Did you by chance put stop leak in the cooling system when you had the leak last year? If so, I'd disconnect both heater hoses and backflush the heater and see if that fixes it. Had this same trouble in a Dodge Dakota pickup, and took the entire dash out of the truck. Heater hoses were warm going in, cold coming out. Removed both lines, backflushed for several minutes, and got significant amounts of crud from the heater. Put it back together and it works as new.

i had the same problem with my 2002 taurus, heater blowing cold air. i drained the anti-freeze
and it was filthy. put in new coolant and still no heat. drained it again and pulled both heater
hoses at the engine. bought a 3/4" female garden hose repair end at the hdwre store, plugged it into the heater hose that i pulled from the water pump. then connected my garden hose
spray nozzle to this connection. i had to gently clamp off the bi-pass hose on the firewall
between the two heater core outlets. one blast for about 5 seconds blew all kinds of rust
flakes out the other heater hose. put it all back together, filled with coolant and left the clamp
on the bi-pas till the car was warm to work the pure water out of the core. heats like a champ.

2002 flex fuel 3.0 v6...Does this model have issues with a leaking coolant reservoir? My heater was running cold a few days ago so I went in and found that the reservoir had run empty. Figured this was the issue so I filled it but the heat still wont come out hot, just warm(enough to help with defrosting windshield though) I noticed last night when I got home that there was a smell of antifreeze coming from the hood so opened it up to see if I could find any steam/smoke but to no avail, just the smell. It is damp underneath the reservoir so I am going to take it out and check it for leaks with some soapy water. Could the issue be a backed up system because of letting it run dry? I know these systems get clogged up on occasion. Thanks in advance for any responses. I'm not much of a mechanic, this car has basically been my first real exposure to general upkeep and maintenance aside from fluid levels and oil changes.
