Hey guys i'm going to be buying a 2003 Lincoln Aviator. I live in New England and the all wheel drive will do me some justice during the winter season. The mustang is getting stored away and hopefully the lincoln will be on the street soon if all goes well. I'm hoping one of you fellas has a carfax account and could run the aviators VIN for me. 5LMEU78H83ZJ21901. My email is spedro1984@yahoo.com or you could shoot me a text at 774-294-7597.

My '97 Taurus wagon (GL) was bought brand new and has never been touched by a "professional" mechanic. I've done all the repairs myself. The problems I've had with my vehicle are surely the TRUE problems associated with this make and model. On my recommendation, my father bought a similar '97 Taurus (sedan, not wagon) and experienced the exact same problems with his vehicle. The problems were: bad VSS, bad CMP, contaminated/gunked-up cooling system, cracked degas bottle, soft transmission, door ajar light, etc. In the case of the gunked-up cooling system, I have successfully thwarted serious problems by continuously flushing the system. My Dad, however, had an incompetent mechanic who let his system corrode to the point where his freeze plugs rusted out. The 2nd plug required removal of the tranny - a $700 bill to replace a $5 part. Never should've happened. My father immediately dumped the car and now says he'll never buy another Ford the rest of his life. If he were in your survey, his $700 repair skews the data because it wasn't a real problem with the vehicle as much as it was a problem with who was SERVICING the vehicle.
by the same token it doesn't account for dumb owners who don't perform the required maintenance.

Being aware that we can't be right all the time just as there are people that should not be doctors, teachers, and what we might consider average folks out here, there are people that should not own cars nor attempt to repair them. Another point of view is there would be a lot of people out of a job if the vehicles didn't have problems. If there is a vehicle out there that never had a problem I haven't heard of it yet. Being a former Taurus owner (3) , they provided good service when properly maintained and even then they all came with their problems. I'm not sure I would want to own a new one today.

Are there professional hacks out there, you bet.

book reading backyarders think they know everything. I wouldn't let them rotate my tires...they think all that involved is moving the tires. If they had to work on the shop floor they would be lost.

FWIW, we do exclude problems caused by neglect or incompetent mechanics.

The main weakness of this survey is that we need more participants. For those reading this who aren't yet participating, I hope you'll consider helping us provide better information on the Taurus.
