I have a 1996 Ford Taurus 6V, 3.0 Vulcan engine,and its a Flex fuel. I have a problem with my fuel gauges, this car comes with two, one is the mechanical and then on the bottom is has electronic reading Miles to empty. Well I started having problems first with the mechanical gauge. It reads sometimes half of 1/4 tan tank but the electronic one will read 45 or higher miles to empty. Then after the cars has been off for a while and start it up again, I will get a full quarter but the miles to empty will read 25 miles or so to empty. I got stuck on empty on the freeway once even thou both gauges readings still had gas registering. I assume the gas meter in the tank probably need to be replaced but I wonder if that will solve the miles to empty meter. Has anybody ever had this problem that can give me some help and hints what I should be checking etc.

 

look for the sending unit for the fuel gauge. look at the tank area.
