94 roof/door trim, REQUIRED??

Hey all. I have a 94 tbird that I inherited. it runs ok (3.8) & the body - sheet metal wise- is good, BUT... I have never seen factory paint DIE like this one. I mean it looks like it has lichien/moss growing on it. I would like to redo the paint myself, as I have all the tools, but what I cannot figure out is that big black molding strip that runs the length of the roof..(UGLY). WHen I redo this car i'm planning on a NASCAR motif.
What I need to know is :
A) how do I remove this molding so that I can do the down-to-the-metal refinish job.
B) IS this strip required? and what will I find under it? I'd like to just leave it off - like the NASCAR versions.
C) IF I have to use it, who has the best buy in new ones.

I'm really open to suggestions here, so I'd appriciate ANY info you can give me re: this molding, window molding (also shot), paint prep etc.

Thanks,

Kerry
