Default Ignition Problems

I have an ignition problem in an 1984 Sport Coupe
is there a switch somewhere inside the steering column which can short out ?

The ignition switch is on the top side of the steering colum under the dash and controled by a rod from the key switch. I have seen the wire connector for the main feed come loose and get hot and melt the switch and cause bad connections.
