1983 F-100 engine questions
Hey Guys: I’ve got a 1983 Ford F-100, inline 6-cylinder 300-cubic inch engine, one-barrel Carter carb, new Tremec TKO 5-speed manual tranny (yeeha!) with 1st gear lower than the old stock three-speed manual, with about a zillion miles on the motor (odometer turned over so many times I stopped counting). Faithful workhorse for over twenty years – one of the most dependable pickups Ford ever built. Compression check shows 125 lbs or better all cylinders but I’ve got nominal blow-by from the old rings and I’m going to re-ring the pistons. My question is this: the stock cam doesn’t come on until mid RPMs (out-of-the-hole low end torque weak, 2000 to 3500 pulls well and then tails off) and I’m told there’s another stock cam that comes on at about 1500 RPMs and pulls all the way up through 4000. Can someone let me know if this is correct, the cam part #, and to whom I have to send my buckolas to obtain it? Also, if I install a new twin 2-barrel carb intake with two deuces along with that cam am I going to run afoul of the California Smog *****? Can I say that on the Internet without the guys wearing dark sunglasses and driving government cars pulling up my driveway by sundown? They don’t cotton to civilians having more horsepower, ya know… Thanks, Jonathan Hutchings – JH-Author@hotmail.com
