I have a 1993 E150 with the E40D Trans it shifts hard from 1st to 2nd and when I go up hills it seems to slip I just got the van for free and not sure if there is a shift module to control the shifting or if the trans is shot or if you might have any other ideas I might try befor replacing the trans

 

AModule normal does notcause slipping problems that I ever heard of, but can cause erratic shifting. From my understanding, most if not all Automatic Transmissions are equppied with a Module.
I would suggest that you drain & change the Trans. filter & fluild, and if that doesn't improve the matter, then most likley you will a Trans. overall or replacement.
