Default 1996 Explorer - gas mileage

Hey everyone, this my first day on this site. . . . So, I took my 96 Explorer to the desert. I was on dirt roads for a day, never bad enough to need 4 wheel drive. The conditions were extremely dusty. Since this trip ive been getting roughly 30-40 mile less per tank of gas. Can dust do this to an engine? clog a fuel filter? clog a fuel pump? anything?

I would start by checking the air filter. If it is getting clogged, you will lose fuel economy. It's a cheap fix.
