Default 1998 Escort stopped running

Running fine no issues. Driving down the road, just stopped. No noises, thumps...anything. Will crank just fine. When you turn the key on your can hear ( I beleive ), the fuel pump turn on and come up to preasure. Looking for help in troubleshooting procedure. I can smell the odor of gas slightly under the hood so I am thinking it's flooding so no spark is probably the issue.
Can someone suggest a methodology for figuring this out ?

If you confirm there is no spark, check the crankshaft sensor.

So, I looked in the oil fill to see if the rockers were working and they are not which indicates a bad timing belt ? I have asked many folks about the 1998 SPI2000 SOHC engine to find out if it is a interference engine or not and got mixed replies. Is this documented somewhere ? If it is a interference engine what is the likelyhood of bent valves / other damage ?

From what I can see in the service manual, it does not state that it is an interference engine. I am not that familiar with that engine, so I can not tell you for sure. Another site has the SOHC as non-interference and the DOHC as interference.
