Default 4eat transmission trouble

The 4eat automatic transmission in my ford escort is blowing the front pump seal out (the seal for the torque converter). Any ideas what is wrong? Could it be a bad pump that is letting pressure buid up behind the seal and blowing it out? Also does anyone know the procedure for removing the pump? I have an extra trans with a good pump but I can't figure out how to remove it..........Roger

Another idea I have, is maybe when the torque converter goes into lockup, the hydrolic pressure is leaking thru to the front pump seal and blowing it off it's boss. The car drives and shifts fine, but the front seal is being pushed off.........Roger

i'm not entirely sure, but where the pump bolts to the case and you have the bolts holding it on remove the bolts and one of theholes is threaded on the pump, if you have a slide hammer hhread it in to the pump and it should pop out, if there isn't a threaded hole in the pump than there is a speacial tool that clamps around the input shaft then you thread your slide hammer into the tool and pull it out. you dont have to use a slide hammer, it just makes it a lot easier.
