Default 5 spd manual

Will a 5 spd manual transmission from a 1996 Ranger 2 wheel drive replace a 5 spd manual from a 1994 ranger 4 wheel drive?

I "thought" it would work also, but I wasn't sure, that's why I asked the question. Is anyone sure it will work?

Hello,

Don't know if you have done this yet or not, but it will work. But, you will have to tear trans completely down and change the main shaft to fit yours. Good bit of work.

Thanks transguy, that would be more work then I want to do. Do you know what years would be compatible to do a simple swap of trannies. And is the shaft change required because of the 2 to 4 wheel drive.

Yes it's because of 2 and 4 wd. Anything 1990 and up 4.0 will work. Also when you get another trans, before you put it in, there are 3 rubber plugs in the top cover at the back. Take a screw driver and pop them out, dry them off and put some RTV on them and push them back in. Thats where they always leak and run low on fluid and wipe the trans out. As cold as it is right now i would either 10w40 motor oil or regular ATF for fluid. Gear oil is to thick and you wont be able to shift it. Also the trans number is M5R1 if that helps in looking for one.
