Check all fuses, the fuel pump relay and the fuel pump cut off switch. If all of those are good, and the fuel pump still will not run, the pump has probably failed.

Default fuel pump

I put power direct to the pump and the pump runs. What would cause the check engine light not to work? All the fuses are good. Thanks kurt

If the pump runs with direct power, it has to be a fuse, relay or the cut off switch. If the check engine light does not come on, it has to be a blown fuse, bad bulb, or a bad connection behind the dash.

The CEL wont necessarily come on with a bad pump relay. There is no diagnostic circuit to do this.

First, check the fuses and make sure they are good. Then, track down the reset switch, and make sure that it is re-set. Then find the fuel pump relay, and check it.
