Default a/c not cooling...what are fresh air doors?

Hi,

Can someone help me with an a/c question? For about 2 months now, I have noticed that the a/c in my 2003 explorer didnt seem to be cooling properly. It got worse over time and now it doesnt cool at all. It blows air, but not at full capacity and not cold. Could it be lack of freon or is it something that I heard called 'fresh air doors' being closed or broken?

I appreciate any feedback,
Thanks,
Gail

First...

Check to see if the compressor/clutch is engaged and rotating when the A/C is on.. The system has a low pressure/cycling switch that'll 'cancel' clutch engagement if the systems 134a charge drops to low. And since you said it had been getting worse (cabin cooling temp) over the last few months, and now blows warm (ambient) could be the system has now leaked down.. If the A/C compressor isn't engaged, or is cycling ON/OFF rapidly most likely the system pressure is too low.. Possible other causes too, but an 'over time' loss in performance usually relates to a leak down.. If the Compressor has an extended/normal engagement (but still cycling, and will/can vary 'on' times with ambient temps ect.) then check the A/C line at the drier/evaporator box at the firewall.. Should be very cold/icing if the charge is sufficient, and the compressor 'On' times are spec/normal.. Even if there were a blend door issue, the compressor would run, and there would evidence of sufficient charge/operation at the evaporator (cold/ice) or even condensation being deposited on the ground as water.. Also, check for normal heater valve operation for flow cancellation to the heater box.. If the A/C compressor/system is operating normal, the heater valve is closing off heated coolant to the heater box, then the next step would be to diagnose for a blend door issue... Since you said the volume or 'capacity' of cabin air has fallen off, could be a venting/door issue, but check these other items first for normal A/C operation...

So, check for compressor operation..

Check for icing or cold drier to evaporator line.. (state of charge)

Check heater control valve for operation..

Let use know what you find..........
