Default E4OD TRANNY

I have a friend who has a 2000 ford f-250 4X4. The transmission is smoking, slipping and leaking fluid from the bottom of the inspection cover. after pulling out a couple of trees. I have called a couple of tranny shops they are telling me is is probably the pump. My question is would it be smarter to buy a rebuilt E4OD, vice rebulidingit myself? Can I just replace the pump? I'm getting the impression that if it is the pump, itshould rebuild it any way? Is that true? I have found a rebuilt tranny in tampa with a 2 year unlimited milage waranty for 1500.00 Any opinions ideas or help would be greatly apprieciated or a place i can find a less expensive rebulit tranny. I'm by no means a tranny expert. So I'm askin for some knowledge.

The trans for that M/Y would be a 4R100. First off, how many miles are on that trans?
