Default Hurst Indy 3spd shifter linkage

I have a 64 f100 with a Hurst Indy floor shifter. On the shifter rod itself, there is a small rod with notches in it that will go back and forth between plates which in turn operate the shifting rods to change gears. The small rod that fits in the shifter rod, will not stay in the shifter rod, it keeps sliding out when I change gears. There is a groove cut in the small rod where it looks likea c-clip would go. When the small rod is in the shifter rod, it will not push all the way through so I can put a c-clip in the groove, does anyone know how I can fix this problem so the small rod stops sliding out of the shifter rod? I know this is hard to follow, but it is hard to explain. If anyone knows what I am talking about and how to fix it, pleas help...thanks.

If it's a defect or you need info. from Hurst - contact them. Other than that if there's no other way couldn't you just use a mig welder and weld it?
