Mysterious Dissappearing Spark
I seem to have no spark.
If I remove one of the plug wires at the distributor, & put a screwdriver in, it will rest such that there is about a 1/16” gap to the exhaust manifold.
If I then crank the engine, I can see a healthy spark.
So far so good…but, if I connect a plug wire & ground the plug,,,no spark.
Brand new wires & plugs, plus I tried a couple wires I pulled from another car.
This vehicle was running OK the other day.
I replaced points, condenser, rotor, & cap as well as wires & plugs.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Since you have a distributor cap, I will assume that you have a single output coil. I would suspect a bad coil. The reason for my guess is that a weak coil can produce enough voltage to jump a gap thru ambient air pressure, but not thru the compressed air pressure in the cylinder. Thus, causing a "NO-SPARK" condition.
did this work? I have a similar intermittant spark problem with my 1981 Ford motorhome. I have replaced the pickup coil, which seemed to fix the problem, but it has recently died again with no spark. It was operated for about 45 minutes after the new pick up could was put in with no problem.
