Default Timing belt issues

I've got a 99 escort ZX2 on the back of my tow truck that I picked up at a repair station and was told that the timing belt broke and needs to be replaced. DUH, but was also told that there may be possible internal damage to the valves? Do these cars have a non clearance or a clearance type engine? If they are non clearance then I don't want to waste my time digging into it to fix a timing belt when I will need to work on the whole top end too. Look forward to hearing from someone about this? Thanks, toyo03
