Default 2000 Taurus overheats, changed many parts and still need help

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post to this forum.

I always loved the Taurus, and have been pleased with it.
It has been my only Ford.

I have a 2000 Taurus with 120K miles that overheated. It was mentioned that a pipe rotted that goes to the heater, and it caused the overheating. This pipe is between the engine and the firewall.

The mechanic replaced the pipe, the water pump, changed the oil and then noticed that the alternator needed to be changed. The ignition wires were replaced with new Motorcraft ignition wires. The mechanic mentioned that he checked the spark plugs and found that all seemed fine.

The car feels as it has a slight misfiring and on other times, it knocks very roughly. The misfiring is noticed when sitting in traffic, or in Park. Otherwise the engine feels rough or it has the misfire feeling.

Last night as I accelerated, the exhaust was putting or popping very loud.
Today it does not display this symptom.

The day before yesterday, it would not turn over. It took about 8 cranks.
Since then, it cranks immediately.

There does not seem to be any water in the oil, or oil in the coolant.

I asked if the car has spark, fuel pressure and injector pulse?
He said that anything could be wrong with the injectors, but ruled that out.

I am not sure if I missed something to ask?

I am puzzled, and the mechanic asked me to leave it for another day.

I am not sure if the plastic overfill coolant tank also has a leak? Because I noticed fluid at the top of the plastic tank, but that's probably a separate issue.

Could there be a sensor that is out of calibration, an electrical module that has gone on the bum, a mass air flow duct that is disconnected?

Does the mechanic have to scan for stored codes?

Last but not least, there has been an intermittent issue with one of the dash warning lights - it's shaped as a gas station pump - goes on and the gas needle drops down to empty on a full tank of gas. Someone told me that the secondary coil in the fuel pump needed to be checked?

Any help is appreciated.

Best,
Michael
