Default Excursion overhead compass, mpg help

Hi I have an 01 excursion, xlt, I bought about two years ago. There is a delete cover that says "excursion" where the overhead display (od) would be. I want to put an od there. My question is, is the od a stand alone unit, or is there a module like a bcm that controls it. Do I need a temp sender as well,. There are plenty of expedition, navigators at my local wrecking yards that I can harvest one from. I got one today from a navigator with the wire harness and it wasn't until I got home I realized there is a burnt corner on the display. When I plugged it in nothing happened. So I don't know if it's a bad unit or if I need more parts. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
