Default NEW here

Hey guys, new here and slightly new to Ford. Been a Mopar guy most of my life, owned a 2001 f150 supercrew 4x4 for a while, great truck. But what brings me here is a recent purchase of a play around toy, a 65 ranchero w/302 C4 combo. Just something to play with, haven't owned anything to fix up in about 20 years. Cars owned in the past 73 challenger, 70 challenger, 69 GTX, and a 78 dodge truck. So no stranger to "garage fixing" cars.
My question here, not knowing too much about the ford engines... is timing a 302 from under the vehicle normal??? I mean the timing pointer on this 302 is at 4 to 5 o'clock driver side. Starts, runs, rough at first then idles smooth, runs down the road, not too much power, just don't sound right to me. The timing marks are there off #1 plug wire and it's holding a smooth 20"... just don't sound right to me.

welcome to the sight and no the timing is not on the bottom of the engine the number one spark plug is on the right side of the engine or passenger side of the car the pointer is supposed to be in between the alt. and the water pump the timing should be at 8 deg. btdc
