Red face Newbie with a problem

I am new here I am from Eastern NC(God's Country) I have a 1997 Ford Escort with a 1999 engine . My problem is (dont laugh) I cant get the battery out. There is a long rod holding the rubber clamp down, but I cant get the rubber clamp off. Any one know how to remove this battery, Thanks for any replies.

Welcome to the site..

Once the cables are removed you should be able to remove/slide the battery cover off.. Remove the batter hold down bolt, and the hold down clamp/wedge should come off fairly easily.. If its stuck, you might try 'bumping' the battery to get it to come loose.. If the hold down bolt breaks off from corrosion, it may leave a portion in the clamp making it harder to get it loose..
