Your going to need to specify what you want the OBD2 tool to do.
Pull engine/trsns codes only.
Pull engine/trans/abs/airbag codes.
Pull codes from every module on the vehicle ranging from the lighting control module to the liftgate control module to the running board module.
Be able to view and record live data from every module.
Be able to turn on and off features in modules for testing.
Be able to do on demand module self tests.
Be able to program new modules and keys to the vehicle.
Do you want a corded stand alone tool.
Do you want a bluetooth smart phone connected tool.
Do you want a computer run program tool.
Do you want a Ford specific tool or a tool that works with every make.
For example I have a 30 dollar engine/trans code puller in my truck for if the cel comes on I can see what codes are present on the side of the road but it doesn't read abs/airbag cores.
My dealer has a autel $1000 tool that works with all makes that can pull any code and show/record live data.
My dealer also has the multiple laptops with the Ford IDS program that does everything possible but only works on Fords.

Agreed - it all depends on what you want to do with it. And how much you want to spend. But I will say it's tough to squeeze out the real info of a lot of code readers.

I have an article about this, it might help sort through all of the options available, as well as some recommendations.

I don't have time to work on the Cars and Trucks myself much but would like one for American and foreign vehicles and be under $100.

Thanks Scott

Once again you need to say what type of codes you want to be able to read, for under $100 its harder to get a good scan tool that does engine/trans/abs/airbag.
Here is one that will do all that and live data, its a little above $100 though. If all you want is engine/trans code reader then you can buy one for $30 easy.

I know Harbor Freight sells OBD2 tools that I assume they are on the cheaper side, I dont know how good they are though, I have had very poor experience with anything electrical from them.
