Default Starter or Flywheel

Hello, thank you for any help I can get. I have a 1997 Ford F350 7.3L, I replaced the starter approx. 6 months ago due to slow start. One day I moved the truck from the front yard to the rear yard and it didn't want to turn off, like the starter was still engaged. Asked at the parts store they suggested it was probably the starter switch. Changed it out. Went for approx. a month without problems, the last time I drove it was making a horrible grinding noise for approx. 4 miles then the noise quit. Truck was running fine. Got home turned it off and it would not restart. Pulled the starter it was all ground down. My question is. I have a new starter but am afraid it could have damaged the flywheel? How do I turn the fly wheel wheel to check it? Or do I figure the starter is softer metal than the flywheel and just put the starter back in?
