Default '88 Mercury Sable Wagon stalls

Needed a second vehicle for the wife to drive about a mile and a half each way to work. Her Mother had an '88Mercury Sable wagon for next to nothing and in nice shape. The engine is a 3.0 I believe. Anywayengine runs great when it's running, LOL but after she starts it and drives about 3/4 of a mile it stalls out at a red light, or at the bank teller window. Anyway, it's never while you are going down the road, just when she stops and only after it has been running for a few minutes. Runs great on start up, but stalls after running or idling. It that the fuel filter? Someone said it could be the pump, but why would it only do that when stopped and idling? any help would be great!! Also, where the HELL is the dang filter anyway??

Filter is under the rear of the car in front of the fuel tank. Replace filter for good measure. Then replace the ignition module located on the distributor (need special socket to remove/replace). Has one wiring harness plug attached. They get old and cause problems in high milage/age cars. Be sure to use just enough dielectric compund when reinstalling and cover the rear surface completely (after cleaning off the old compound).
