Default Merc Sable stalls when I press the gas.

I have a 2002 Mercury Sable, auto trans. Everytime I press the gas it stalls out. I am guessing fual filter needs to be replaced since I couldn't say when the last time it was replaced. The check engine light is on. But, if that doesn't do the trick, what would be my next step? Please help with any sugestions. Please tell me if Im on the right track too. Thanks.

Hi there.

A new fuel filter would not hurt and it's not expensive but the first step is to get the digital trouble code.

If you can go to a parts store they will read it for free. Or you can loan a reader from them.

Let us know the codes.

Default Changed fual filter....But.....

A new fual filter helped and, I can't get codes right now. What do you suppose it could be? Spark plugs, wires, or distributer?

Plugs wires and coil pack could be involved. I don't think it has a distributor. change the parts if they haven't been changed for a long time. Then disconnect the battery negative and step on the brake to drain all voltage that resets the computer.

Honestly just stop shooting parts at your car. You need to get the CODES bottom line.

Yea, That is the correct thing to do. Thanks everyone. I'm going to try and get those codes.
