I have a 2016 Lincoln MKZ 2.0 FWD with 49k on the clock. Random hard shifting (feels like tapping my back bumper) is getting more frequent. Position 8 VIN digit is '9' and door jamb TR label is 'W', but I'll be dammed if I can find out what they mean. I think it's the 6F35 Select Shift. I took it to a local trans shop with very high google reviews. (YMMV, but google reviews have generally worked well for me.) The shop owner plugged in a code reader, and there were no codes. We went for a test drive, and of course, no bad shifting. Shop owner told me that when (not if) the trans broke, he'd have me order a reman from his vendor sent to his shop and he'd install it. Cost $3500-$4K.

My question: All the research I've done says this trans is a design/engineering failure. Doesn't that mean that a reman is eventually going to fail just like the one I have now? (Especially if rebuilt with crap Ford OEM parts.)

I'd particularly like to hear from anyone who had this trans fail on them. What was your solution? Many thanks for your help, PW

 

A little FYI.
A rebuilt trans usually only has the parts that appeared worn ,replaced.

A remanufactured trans has all new parts plus all the latest modifications to bring it up to date plus also has a much better warranty, , and it costs more than a rebuilt trans.

 

Thanks for the tip. Ford stopped making the 6F35 after 2019, and judging by their craptastic quality record over the last 15 years or so, I'd be surprised to hear that they made any improvements or upgrades during its lifetime. I've been a Ford guy since 1995. Nothing but trouble with my last two: a 2012 Fusion and now the Lincoln. Never again.
