Default Shorted Door locks on 2000 E-150

I was testing my battery voltage today and accidentally plugged my positive multimeter lead into the amperage plug. I believe I shorted out the power door locks. Whether the vehicle's engine is running or not the power locks keep attempting to/ or actually do, actuate. At first, the truck had a hard time starting, but that has cleared. I can readily actuate the door locks to closed or open with the key remote, but the actual door lock switches will not consistently work and the locks will continue to cycle repeatedly at will. I locked the doors with the remote for the evening only to hear them click open as I walked away from the vehicle. If I wait long enough they will likely lock on their own and repeat at will. Can anyone help me figure out what I can do to solve this issue? No other issues are apparent (power windows, lights, flashers, radio, etc are working.

Shorting your battery by connecting the positive and negative terminals via a multi meter set for amperage would not cause this problem - if that is what you mean happened. I would pull off the driver's side door panel and disconnect the door lock connector. Should be just one that also includes windows and mirrors if it's like the 2006's. Then see if you still have the problem. If you do, try the same thing on the passenger side. If one of the door switches is bad, you'll figure it out this way. If this doesn't help then there are some connectors and the anti-theft module in the passenger side kick panel to look at. I ran across a vehicle that had a water leak that caused problems in those connectors. That problem was a dome light issue, but the door lock stuff is over there also I believe. The only other thing that comes to mind is if your model has a feature that will lock the doors when the vehicle is put into gear and unlock when it is taken out. The vans I've worked with don't have this, but I have just a few model years that I work with. Anyhow that could be a problem source to investigate if you've got that feature.

Are your dome lights coming on as well?
Do you have a clicking or ticking in the dash or kick panel when the doors lock and unlock themselves?
Have you tried leaving the FOB in the house and using your key to lock the door, see if they unlock on their own?
Have you tried disconnecting the battery for 5 minutes and reconnecting?

If this just started when you tested the battery, there are a few other things I would consider as well as the delgriffith’s suggestions. You could (shot in the dark) have ticked off the VSM (vehicle security module) or the RKE (remote keyless entry module).
There is a reset procedure for the VSM which is to pull and replace the fuse for it, key out. Unable to locate a fuse box diagram for your van I am little help there, but it should be a 5a fuse that is always hot. Pull it out wait a few seconds and put it back. A little less evasive test than the rest of the checks and just as likely a cause.

Good luck
