63 Galaxie

63 Galaxie
I have a 63 Galaxie with a 289. I have a friend with 69 Lincoln with a 460. I know Crites makes a conversion kit to put a 460 in the Galaxie. I know the Lincoln has a large C-6 transmission. Is this a good conversion swap? thanks

The C6 makes this worthless. It is such a big heavy truck transmission that it will rob all the 460's HP. It may even be faster with the 289 (C4 I assume?) C6 is still a three speed, don't let the higher number fool you. If you have a manual I say don't even trade for a 390 C4, the best automatic ford combo. A manual gives you so much more control, Any mountain driving practically requires it. I can't tell where you're from so I am assuming all different types of roadways. A 289 with any tranny besides a C6 will give you more get up & go than anything with a C6 behind it. It will also give you better mileage than a 460, no matter what that monster is pulling.
289 is also a thousand times easier to find parts for. Almost all the mustangs had it.

Allow me to take a prior statement back. A C6 pulled by a V12 will obviously whup your 289 before you cranked the starter. That V12 would also rip the C6 to shreds eventually. The C6 was designed with the F-250 thru F-550 series in mind. Getting your horses, dump truck loads, freight, etc. from here to there. somehow it worked on some street machines. These were very inefficient street machines for the rich man.

I'm back, years later and done trolling.
The transmission designation comes from the year put in service. The C6 weighs a little more, and is more durable. The C4 is also comparatively heavy.
The fact that the C6 tended to be used in trucks has nothing to do with anything although true, and really was just me being a troll.
The main problem with such a conversion is the front suspension upgrades required, but given the willingness to spend the money it can be done. There are enough other issues that can arise that many would just say buy a car that had a larger motor in it to start with rather than convert a car with a small block build.
Since then, who knows what has happened. Since I may be coming back to the forum just want to point out most of the pre-2013 posts on this account are pure unadulterated embarrassing trolling.
