Starter issues with 302 and AOD.

Starter issues with 302 and AOD.
I've gone through 3 starters in 5 months. They no longer engage the flex plate. Makes a very loud clunk sound. I see 157 tooth and 164 tooth flexplates. Would having the wrong flex plate cause this? Thanks.
