Hi all,

My shift lever has always been tricky, and often needed moving in and out of park to start.

It recently got worse. I can only start the truck by moving the shift to neutral - although neutral is somewhere between R and N.

Also, when I stop, I cannot get into park - only R - so I have to park in neutral and have the brake on.

Is the sloppiness in the lever assembly, or is the problem elsewhere?

You might want to check the cable connection at the trans , if it has shifted some , all you need to do is place the trans in park ,release the cable adjustment ( usually a black plastic piece with small teeth on it) and reposition it where the lever inside the vehicle is in the correct park position. Let us know how you make out.

Check the bottom of the 'main portion' of the column.. You'll see 2 torx screws that hold the lower cable arm attachment.. They love to come loose and will make for a 'selector hunt' condition.. Also, the 'shift tube' that runs from the selector lever down to the lower arm like to crack/break.. Also, the half clamps that hold the shifter tube down with nylon bushing inserts to the main column assembly can wear out and allow the shift tube to wooble. The torx screws for the half clamps can come loose as well.. More often than not, its the lower torx screws..
