Ford Contour While only built on a short time span, the Contour was very popular with people of all driving styles, from the base model making for a great family car, to the SVT making a great track toy.

Default 97 Contour dies

Took car in after it died on the road. It restarted again after I pulled over. Shop said battery cables corroded so they were changed. Did not solve the problem as car died again today. Radio kept working but the lights on dashboard came on. I was able to restart it again and drove it home. Will be taking it in again -- any ideas of what could be wrong? Someone had suggested the ignition switch but I don't see why it would cause this issue. Had the multifunction switch on the steering column change a week or so ago. Never had a problem with this car until now. It is a 97 contour with 56,000 miles.

Default RE: 97 Contour dies

i have a similar problem with my 2000 contour as well -
sometimes it starts smoothly, sometimes it doesn't -
the mechanics tested the battery, starter, alternator and said they were good ...

here's an interesting fact ... when it failed to start .. i would leave the car alone for a good 5 - 10 mins,
then come back, it'll start again ... that's really odd.

any ideas ?

Pull up rear seat bottom cushion. Remove rubber cover over the fuel pump/gas tank. Release metal retaining clip and pull off the fuel pump/gas gauge multipin connector. The female terminals begin to melt and recede away from the male connectors. Replacement multipin connector is available through Ford dealor.
