I have a 98 Contour 2.0 that just overheated on the highway. It got hot, then the engine shut down and would not re-start. I had it towed home. I then tried to start it after it cooled down and it sounds like the starter runs, but wont crank the engine over. My first thought is that I probably locked up the engine, so I took off the timing belt cover and put a socket on the cam sprocket and the engine still turns over and the timing belt is ok.. I then checked codes and I have a PO 117 code which is a overheat code. Anyone have any ideas what to check next? I didn't loose any coolant, so that isn't why it overheated, but now I am confused why the starter just runs without turning over the engine? Help please
