I have a 98 Contour SE 4 cyl with auto trans and ~170k miles. When I try to fill the gas tank, I can't fill for more than a few seconds, like 20 cents worth, before the pump cuts off. I know that gas bubbling back up into the filler nozzle is what makes the pump shut off. I have tried different pumps and different filling speeds, but nothing works. It seems like some kind of obstruction or constriction in the tube going to the gas tank that won't let the gas flow freely, or maybe there's a check valve that's hung midway between open and closed. It takes about ten minutes to get 8 dollars of gas. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

 

I had this same problem, but oneday it just fixed itself.My dad ran a snake through the gas tank though(I know, odd and most likely not supposed to). I don't know if that helped at all but just sharing my little experience in case it helps.
