Default Gas Spill on Fill Up

Here’s one I can’t seem to find using the search. 02 Windstar, 93,000 miles. When you put gas in it, it sounds like it’s coming up the filler tube and it spews out at you and on to the ground. You have to fill it ever so slowly to get the gas not to spill back out. Also, the gas gauge appears to be bouncing when driving down the road.

Our mechanic put in a new Canister Vent Valve Solenoid but it’s still doing the same thing? What’s next?

Thanks!

Just a layman's guess here. Someone may have dropped something (like a rock, perhaps) down the spout to the gas tank, hence the sound and the backsplash. Try putting a plumber's snake through the gas filler. If you don't have a snake, use something else that is long and firm and flexible at the same time. You want to make sure that whatever you put in is clean, and that it gets all the way to the gas tank without obvious obstruction. If you do run into an obvious obstruction, try not to push past it, as you may just end up wedging the obstruction in tighter into the spout. Depending on how far down the obstruction is, you may be able to jerry-rig a wire hanger with a little scoop to fish out/roll out the obstruction. Hopefully it isn't so deep inside that you have to remove the gas tank.
Do update us with your results.

My guy checked all the blockage. Said it was clean. Thinking it needs a new gas tank now? I can't believe how little info there is on this problem out there.

There have been reports of some problems with the filler tube to the tank, Might have someone remove the fill tube and inspect it.

Do you know if he actually removed the fill tube and looked inside? Or did he just blow through it?

He said both were out of car and fully clear. Reccomendation is a new tank.

Do you know if he checked the vapor system and purge solenoid/valve?
If he checked everything he should know. When the tank is removed you should be able to see if the problem is internal to the tank.

Mentioned the charcoal canister but didn't think it would help? Trying like heck to not replace the tank cause oem is over a grand and I can't seem to find any aftermarkets available.
