Exclamation Window Motors Make Noise But Windows Do Not Go Up Or Down Very Far

Hi everyone,

I have a 1993 Crown Vic (base model I think). The previous owner tinted the windows and the driver side window is the only one that will open and close all the way. However the driver side window goes down quickly and is slow to go up, even when I am parked and the engine is not under stress.

When I push the button to open or close the windows I can hear the motors but the wondows do not move far (Maybe 2 inches up or down.)
I was wondering since the windows are tinted would the previous owner have removed them to put the tint on? If so could the windows not be seated correctly, preventing them from opening and closing?
Any suggestions and instructions or videos on the repairs is apprecaiated, I am willing to take a weeekend to fix it myself if it can b done.

Thanks!

The window motors have internal circuit breakers and the excessive drag might be causing them to open and you have to wait for them to cool down so the window can move another 2 inches.
Sometimes some silicone spray into the window channel will help.

Remove the door panel and lubricate it with synthetic grease. While you are at it with the door panel removed, do a bench test on the motor.
1) Roll the window half way, just not fully opened or closed
2) Disconnect the driver side window switch (required because you will introduce a new circuit in step 4 below)
3) Disconnect the motor connector (should be 2-wires plug somewhere near the middle)
4) Run jumper wires (one + one -) directly from your battery and connect the red to either one terminal (say terminal A) at the window motor connector, and black to other terminal (terminal B), if it goes up, then you know + to A and - to B = upward, if you need downward just swap that like - to A and + to B = downward.

When you test the motor like this you bypass the switch, if it still goes up a couple inches every few minutes wait, your window motor is bad and just buy a new one, only $20 something at rockauto. At rockauto use 298594623264062587 coupon code at checkout, expires 5/16/25.

Thank you for your suggestion! I never would have thought of that.

If you can't read clearly, double click or download the jpg image to view original readable size.
Cardone is a good brand for window motor, so check: Cardone 82382.
