Which engine do you have? Normally, there should be 4 lines going back to the AUX A/C-Heater system (Coolant In-Out and A/C Hi-Lo Pressure) unless Ford used a COMBO line for the A/C (like they did on the Windstar/Freestar vans). Then you would only have 3 lines until the A/C line got to the back, then it would split back out from a "Y" block.

leaks in the area of left rear wheel/axle...there are 3 larger lines and one smaller line that looks like a brake line. no doubt 2 lines go to the heater, but which ones? really appreciate your help

The smaller line would be the liquid line to the rear A/C evaporator. The large line right next to the small line should be the suction line from the rear A/C evaporator. The other 2 large lines would be the coolant lines. The easiest way to verify this would be to fire up the engine and turn on the rear A/C unit. With the A/C compressor running, the small liquid line should get hot and the suction line should get cold. Or, you can leave the A/C off and let the coolant get up to operating temp. The coolant lines would then be the 2 lines that get hot.
