Default engine swap help needed

I currently have a 96 econoline with a 351 motor an im gonna swap it out for a 7.3l powersroke but im not familiar with what yr or model the motor shuld come out of. Does the 7.3 need to b out of an econoline or a f series also does it have to b the same model yr or can it b different? Also im assuming the fuel pump rearend trans an engine harness needs to b changed as well ? Thanks for any help i need it

Your best bet would probably be to check with a Ford parts dept and they should be able to tell you what differences there were between years for the 7.3 . If not too much difference might not be too bad a job. The 7.3 did have to have a vacuum pump to assist with brakes and other vacuum operated items. Don't forget the suspension may be different due to the weight of the diesel engine.

I would hazard a guess that it's not worth it unless you had a wrecked diesel van with a good engine and a good gas van with a junk engine. Yes, the wiring harness, PCM, instrument cluster, fuel tank (and pump), transmission, rear end, and probably a ton of little do-dads that you wouldn't think of. Just took a quick look at Rock Auto and noticed the radiators and a few exhaust parts are different. I'm not sure about 1996, but in the mid 2000's the 7.3 engine required a battery that was not in the engine compartment but just on the inside of the frame near the side cargo door, so that would obviously be different.

In short, you'll need to be ambitious and have no interest in recouping your costs on the changeover, IMHO.
