When you clean the MAF you clean the electrical connector with contact/electric cleaner, and use wire brush if needed. The sensing element of the MAF is what makes MAF goes bad easily all the time and it requires routine cleaning to keep it in top notch. CRC makes MAF cleaner and it works pretty good for routine cleaning, not for fixing MAF issue, in fact there is no such thing as MAF cleaner that can rescue a bad MAF. Test more and see, if you really see it starts with MAF unplugged and no start when it's plug, then you know it's MAF's fault. Everytime you disconnect you should wait 10 minutes or so.
Thanks for the info. I’ll do some further testing with the 10 minute break and clean the MAF. How often should I clean MAF sensor?

That depends on which car the time it takes may vary. On our van it's as easy as changing air filter, so it doesn't hurt to do it every 3 months to keep it in top notch.
Another most overlooked component to replace (not to clean because it's just $5) is the PCV valve, and change it every 20k miles as a preventative routine replacement, to prevent premature valve cover gasket failure and leaking oil, plus to minimize the chance of failure to your cat converter. Why I said most overlooked because so many people never changed it in 20+ years.
