No starting and no electrical power anywhere
I just noticed, both times the original problem went away after he closed the hood. Could be a weak electrical connection and the vibration helped. I'd clean the battery terminals and cable connections first.
There's nothing like a good battery and cables to keep gremlins away.

RESOLUTION:
It has been several months since I posted this, and I have resolved the problem. I ended up taking the battery out, cleaned the terminals (even though they were already very clean), and reconnected the battery cables. Since doing this I've not had an issue. The original connection seemed mechanically very solid, but my suspicion is that there was a bad connection somewhere on the positive or negative cable. The simple act of disconnecting each cable and then reconnecting them must have fixed the bad connection. Thank you all for your input, advice and help!

Hi Martin,
You hit the nail on the head removing and cleaning cable ends that looked OK but had oxidation between the battery post and the cable inside hole.
Many folks including some mechanics get fooled looking at a battery cable end that looks fine , but can be NO GOOD and has to be removed and physically cleaned.
Thanks for sharing that info with us.
