It's my sister suv. I'm going to need help. I have no idea what would be causing this. She disabled it and is opening and closing it in manual. I'm a decent shade tree mechanic, but the newest vehicle I've ever owned is 1998 Ford pu. My girlfriend owns a 2017 Explorer and I've worked on it, but only with help from the Explorer forum. It's a 2019 Ford Edge Sel AWD AT V6 2.0L

 

Has the battery been disconnected for any reason and the problem became apparent after that ?

 

The battery isn't related. She told someone tried to shut it while the hydralics were in the process of closing it. After that all the problems began.

 

The reason I asked about the battery is there is a module that controls lift gate function and if battery gets disconnected that module may need reprogramming.

 

We need to start somewhere and if a scan tool is not available we can check some things.

If the, in vehicle switch, is on and a request to open/close the lift gate what does it do?
Did anybody check the fuse for that gate? Can't do anything if no power.
There are several sensors and we will need to see if we can check their ability to function.
Does this vehicle have a push to start button?
Does she still have the remote that allows lift gate operation?
All these questions are the basics of troubleshooting this problem ..

 

We could take it to O'Reillys or another auto parts store and get it scanned. It hasn't thrown a check engine or other indicator type light though.
When she pushes the button in the suv, the lift gate unlatches, but the hydrolics don't lift up the gate automatically like its supposed to. No one has checked the fuses. I just learned today where the fuse are. She lives a ways from me. I'll check them when I tackle everything. If it's unlatching when she pushes the button, I would think the fuses are probably good. It does have a push button starter. She doesn't have a remote, but there is a sensor under the rear bumper. If your arms are full you can wave your foot under this sensor and the lift gate will open. That's not working either.

 

Use Foxwell NT510 Elite w/ Ford and run active test on your liftgate, so that Foxwell communicates with your LTM (liftgate trunk module) on your behalf. If it opens and closes this way, then the issue is between the button/switch and LTM, noting to do with your liftgate, or in between LTM and your liftgate.
You will need a Ford's specific scanner to retrieve this type of non-P code, the one O'Reillys used might not support or fully support Ford's specific DTCs. And if Foxwell's active test is able to open and close the liftgate, tha's also a good indication that no DTC can be triggered.
And lastly, use Foxwell NT510 Elite to reset LTM, everything might work as expected. You use a capable scanner like this so you can narrow down the issues.
If the liftgate is controlled by LTM then there shouldn't be any liftgate fuse you can pull. A 2019 Ford is considered a fairly new car. New cars like this, it's a bad practice to pull any fuse, and everytime you do that you almost always interrupt the power supply to a particular module, which is bad.

 

Ricky, do you have any kind of test equip to use like test light or voltmeter ? If so we can check fuses without removing them..

Her remote must be in/near the vehicle for the gate to operate, keep that in mind when checking.

 

She doesn't have a remote. I have a volt meter. I'm going to test the fuses when she has time to come over. I'm guessing in a few days.

 

It is called a passkey , which must be near the vehicle for it to start or the lift gate to work..

You cannot check much without it.
