Default CAM Phasers - 08 Edge

Yesterday my 08 Edge started running rough and service engine light came on. Brought back to dealer, they checked the battery, to make sure that wasn't it.... I guess because I am a woman. Tech just called it needs Cam Phasers. Can anyone explain what that is and why they would go, with only 6750 miles on the car. They said it was extesive job and would have the vehicle for 2 days.

Anyone else have this problem? Is it common? Thanks

Take the vehicle to another dealer and get a 2nd opinion. Cam phasers rarely go bad becuase the work off from oil pressure and the electrical solenoids sticking out of the valve covers are what actuate them. And if they checked your battery because it was running rough then someone is blowing smoke up your ***. A bad battery has nothing to do with how smooth or good the engine runs. Take it somewhere else before they rip you off. If you can post the PCM trouble codes i can look them up and tell you what they mean and what you need to do to get it fixed and avoid getting ripped off. You can have the dealership provide them for you or go to your local AutoZone and get them retrieved for free. The only thing that would make a phaser go bad is contamination of dirt or something in your oil that got stuck in the oil passage to the phaser or in the phaser itself. A faulty VCT solenoid could do this also but it is NOT an extensive job and bolts in really quite easly. Do yourself a favor and take it somewhere else.
