Exclamation Ford wont start

I was driving my ford mondeo 2009, the engine stuttered briefly, then move slowly and wont start again after I switched it off to investigate. The mechanic said it's engine problem and will need a new engine but wont tell me exactly what is wrong with the engine. My question is: will the code reader give the engine fault.

Thank you in advance

The answer to your question could be , yes and no !
If the reason the engine quit running was something that is monitored by it's sensors, you could get a code. If it was not monitored, like lack of oil, the computer will not usually let you know that. Most times when an engine decides to quit running the basics need to be checked first. Have you checked for those yet?
