Default Best way to mount a cell phone in 2001-2007 Ford Escape?

I have tried many different methods to mount a smartphone and make it accessible while driving my wife's 2003 Ford Escape. It is especially useful as a GPS. I've used suction, smartphone cup holder, vent magnets and other things. Yet, none of them are ideal. The suction devices never stay suctioned for long. The cup holder forces the driver to turn his/her head too much and the vent magnets require magnets under the phone case that impede wireless charging.

Is there a "best" method to use your smartphone as a mounted GPS unit?
What works for you?

I think that it would be ideal to utilize something that takes advantage of the dash slot/cubby that is located below the radio and next to the defrost and hazard buttons.
